Amend KRS 620.140 to expand the ability for a dependent, neglected, or abused youth to request to have his or her commitment extended or reinstated beyond the age of 18.
Plain-language summary
This bill would allow young people in Kentucky's child welfare system to request that their case remain open or be reopened past their 18th birthday. Current law limits when such extensions can be requested, and this change would expand those opportunities. It is intended to help youth who age out of the system continue receiving support and oversight. Who it may affect: dependent, neglected, or abused youth approaching or reaching adulthood who are involved in Kentucky's child welfare and family court system.
